Goal setting is one of the most important skills taught to athletes in order to help them achieve optimal performance. The goal setting process helps athletes understand where they are currently and also where they want to go.
There are three commonly accepted types of goals coaches can set:
1. Outcome goals are those that compare the performances of athletes with those of other athletes. For example, " I want to win the a championship" means that the athlete's outcome depends on the performances of others.
2. Performance goals are used to improve an athlete's individual performance. For example, score 20 goals during a season. The athlete has much better control here.
3. Process goals are used to improve the execution of a skill. For example, improve 100m running technique.
Goal setting can be an important part of any athlete’s training plan, whether their goal is to improve their physical skills, mental skills, or just get more enjoyment out of their sport. Setting goals can help athletes focus on what is most important, increase their effort and motivation to stick with their plan, consider new strategies regarding how to accomplish their goals and help them track their progress (Hodges and Franks, 2002). As anyone who has ever set a New Year’s resolution knows, however, setting goals is easy; reaching goals is tough. That is why, for example, research shows that about 50% of people who begin an exercise program discontinue it within six months (Hodges and Franks, 2002).This is why goal seeting is so impotant because it gives the athlete a chance to improve themselves and make a differance to their performance.
The image shows the goal setting process and what different things go into it to make it work so well. This idea works well because it gives the athelte a chance to work through the different parts and help to improve themselves.
According to Athletics Weekly, (2013) ''Goal-setting is a fundamental part of training in sport and is integral for enhancing performance and motivating the athlete and enhancing their self-belief with regards to their skill and ability.'' This statment just shows why goal setting is really important in performance analysis because it gives people a chance to set targets and try and better themselves so they become better athletes in the future.
